As a member of the Mental Health and Addiction Services, the incumbent is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team in Emergency Services. The incumbent represents Mental Health and Addiction Services to the public and to agencies by providing information, intake assessment, crisis response services, referral, consultation, research and education. Responsibilities include direct patient care, use of assessment tools, screening, crisis intervention, referral, short term case management, counseling, goal planning and consultation in the Emergency Department
Job Qualifications
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree/Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor Degree/Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (SRNA) or Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Saskatchewan (RPNAS)
  • Basic CPR, PART certification and ASSIST required

  • Experience
    Requires 3 years full-time experience in Acute Psychiatric Nursing or Community Mental Health nursing experience or in a combination of the two. Experience in the previous 3 years in dealing with children and youth with acute and chronic psychiatric disorder. Experience in the previous 3 years in psychiatric assessment and intervention required. Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a mental health setting preferred.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of local human service organizations, resources and referral procedures
  • Current knowledge of human growth and development, human behaviour, psychopathology, the family life cycle and systems theory
  • Understanding of the principles of nursing process and interventions in relation to mental health of the individual, including the ability to utilize a variety of assessment tools, i.e. Mental Status Exam, BPRS, and Suicide Risk Assessment etc
  • Knowledge of mental health and mental illness across the life cycle
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Health Promotion and Health Prevention initiatives in Mental Health and Addiction Services.
  • Current knowledge of medical and psychosocial interventions appropriate to Mental Health
  • Demonstrates keyboarding and computer skills.
  • Understanding of the impact of mental health and mental illness on the patient, family and community
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public
  • Demonstrates the ability to plan, organize and coordinate efforts with other multidisciplinary team members and community agencies
  • Demonstrates the ability to be resourceful and to adapt to changing conditions
  • Requires initiative and judgement to plan, implement, and modify treatment programs according to needs of individual patients
  • Has the ability to make decisions in accordance with the policies and procedures of SHR, Mental Health and Addiction Services
  • Current knowledge of mental health and mental illness issues in a variety of settings, i.e. acute, community
  • Requires an ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others

  • NOTE: This is a Provincial Posting and is open to all SUN members within the bargaining unit as per Articles 27.02 and 27.05 of the SUN Collective Bargaining Agreement. First preference will be given to employees of the SKHA (Saskatoon) and its affiliated agencies.

    This position has the potential to provide periodic support to adult clients as well.
