Summary

The purpose of this position is to function as Optometrist with full program responsibility for the Kyle health center Optometry Program, provide supervision to any subordinates, provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and optometric care to individuals, provide coordination of the optometry department, outpatient services, and the Joslin Vision Network (IHS-JVN) Diabetes Eye Care Program Imaging services for diabetic and eye clinic patients.

Responsibilities

  • Independently diagnoses all optometric and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and surrounding tissue.
  • Refers patients requiring complex medical surgery or services to appropriate medical specialty.
  • Provides vision and eye care education and counseling to patients.
  • Takes complete history from the patient and/or family member to determine risk of eye disease. Records all patient care examinations, assessments, procedures and care plans.
  • Supervises subordinates, develops and monitors the eye care budget, devises and implements projects.

    This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

    A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

    Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

    The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

    On-call hours or standby duty may be required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience in providing technical guidance to optometry staff; reviewing and/or revising policies and procedures; assisting with quality assurance activities, etc. Experience in hospital-based optometry includes the diagnosis and management of ammetropias, ocular infections, ocular inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, dry eye conditions, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, ocular trauma and binocular dysfunctions; and operating optometric diagnostic and treatment instruments and equipment or completed one year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
